The Art of Safrut!
On Wednesday, we had the privilege of welcoming Rabbi Serels, a valued member of our Westchester Day School family, parent of Diana Serels Schwartz (WDS '00), and grandfather to Jordan (8th Grade), Lexi (6th Grade), and Max (3rd Grade). Rabbi Serels delivered an engaging lesson on Safrut (the art of writing Sefer Torah, Tefillin, and Mezuzot) for our 5th, 6th, and 7th graders in preparation for this Sunday’s Hachnasat Sefer Torah celebration at Westchester Day School. He explained the meticulous processes of repairing letters and stitching parchment while demonstrating the tools used. Students also participated in hands-on activities like stitching and writing their names in Torah script—an incredible experience for all!
