What better way to learn about Jewish immigrant culture and culinary trends of the early 1900s than by making pickles! The 8th graders enjoyed a class on pickle-making with Mrs. Rivel to connect to their ELA novel, Uprising, by Margaret Peterson Haddix. After viewing a short film with snapshots of pickle pushcarts from 1910 and a current interview with the owner of The Pickle Guys on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, students sliced, spiced, and brined their own Kirby cukes. So much fun was had by all!
