Westchester Summer Day - Job Descriptions

2025 Summer Staff Availability: Sunday June 22 - Wed Aug 20, 2025

(These dates include staff orientation, training, WSD set -up/clean-up)

First day for children: Thursday, June 26, 2025

All WSD Jobs have the following expectations:
  • Arrive before children in the morning and leave after children are dismissed  in the afternoon.  WSD Workday is Monday through Friday, from 8:15 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. 
  • Participate in trips that return after hours, stay on the grounds for late nights, and/or up to 2 overnights.
  • Any additional duties (rainy day activity changes, arrival & dismissal help) that may arise.
  • Staff ages 16-18 must provide working papers before they start working.
  • Adhere to WSD dress code:  A WSD T shirt must be worn by all staff. Females - one piece bathing suit needed..
  • Attend all training sessions as required by the Westchester Department of Health and the WSD Leadership team.
  • We are a cell phone free camp. Staff will not be allowed on their phones between 8:15am-4:15pm.
WSD Leadership

We are seeking skilled and talented professionals, experienced in working with children, adolescents and young adults, to support our campers, staff and families. Leadership is responsible for the safety and well being of the campers in their division. They are a direct line of communication with families before and during the camp season. Leadership staff must be enthusiastic, caring, and supportive role models to children and staff. Position begins March 2025.

Requirements: College degree, work experience, leadership experience

Current Red cross certified CPR and First aid and RTE advanced first aid. (Provided by WSD)

Division Head:

This role will support staff members and campers to ensure that every child has a safe, fun, nurturing and instructional summer. They are the connection between parents and WSD. 

Day to day responsibilities: DHs will be given notes daily regarding campers, phone messages to return, dismissal changes, early or late arrival, etc. DHs will confidentially and discreetly communicate information with group counselors. To be effective and successful, the DH should be among the campers all day, including lunch and snacks. As much as possible, they should stay out of the office, as meeting and communicating with fellow staff members is best accomplished outside on campus. The DH should be a constant presence for all to see and to use as support. DH report to Camp Directors.

Head Counselor:

The Head Counselor is a role model to staff and children. It is imperative for the Head Counselor to lead by example with a high energy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude. Head counselors support both their division head, counselors, and children they are overseeing.

Additional duties: 
  • 1 late night (all divisions) 
  •  1 -2 overnights are required in the upper divisions. 
WSD Staff
  • Early Childhood Group Leaders

We seek aspiring or current early childhood educators to work with our children this summer. A Group Leader is responsible for the safety and well-being of the children. Staff must be enthusiastic, caring, and be supportive role models to children ages 2-5. Group Leaders must follow a written schedule, take attendance at all activities, keep track of assigned children, organize campers belongings such as towels and backpacks, ensure campers are applying sunscreen and hydrating, and create a nurturing and safe environment for children to succeed.  A Group Leader participates in all scheduled group activities, crafting, sports games, nature, beach and pool. They must participate in all swim activities, arrive before children in the morning and leave after children are dismissed  in the afternoon.  

Additional duties:  1 late night during the summer 

  • Counselors  

Counselors are responsible for the safety and well-being of the children. They are enthusiastic, caring, and able to be a supportive role model to children ages 2-12. Day to day responsibilities include leading groups of 16-18 campers throughout their day,  following a written schedule, taking attendance at all activities, keeping track of assigned children, organizing children belongings such as towels and backpacks, ensuring children are applying sunscreen and hydrating, and create a nurturing and safe environment for children to succeed.  Counselors participate in all scheduled group activities, crafting, sports games, nature, beach and pool. Must participate in all swim activities, arrive before children in the morning and leave after children are dismissed  in the afternoon.

Additional duties: 

  • 1 late night (all divisions) 
  •  2 overnights are required in the upper divisions.

Specialty Staff 

An activity specialist is responsible for the planning, leading, and implementing age-appropriate instruction for their specified activity. They will also be responsible for daily  set up, clean up and the general safety , development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants that attend their specialty program. Specialists will follow all WSD rules and regulations as well as  provide high quality educational and recreational experiences for participants.  

We are currently seeking activity specialists for the following positions: 

  • Arts and Crafts, Jewelry Making, 
    • Art Assistants
  • Sports (kickball, volleyball, flag football, floor hockey, tennis, 9 Square) 
  • Theatre
  • Cooking & Baking, Edible Art
  • Jewish Enrichment
  • Israeli Culture 
  • Movement, Dance, Zumba, Yoga
  • Chess
  • Music
  • Stem activities Coding, Robotics, Chess, Rocketry

Additional duties: 

  • 1 late night (all divisions) 
  • Arrival & dismissal assistance

Ropes Course Staff  

Ropes staff must attend ropes training classes in June. Staff will be trained and certified to operate the WSD ropes course. Prior experience is not necessary. Looking for energetic, compassionate staff to guide and assist children through various high and low ropes challenges on our ropes course. Willingness and ability to climb rockwall,  operate platforms 25 feet in the air, assist children with putting on safety gear and guiding children through the challenge course. 

WSD Aquatics & Waterfront

  • Pool Lifeguards 

Lifeguards teach swim classes the first half of the day and conduct active surveillance of the pools in the afternoon. Lifeguards with WSI certification will be assigned as head instructors. It is possible to strictly be a lifeguard that completes surveillance throughout the day if requested at the interview. All Lifeguards must have current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

*We will reimburse you for your certification upon completion of your summer contract.*

Additional duties: 1 late night

  • Beach  Staff

Beach staff will help facilitate our boating program on the Long Island Sound. All Beach staff must have current certification in American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. A boat license and/or captain's licence is required to operate the rescue boats.

Day to day duties include: beach set up, cleanup, gear & equipment maintenance, safety and boh compliance. Must arrive before campers in the morning and leave after campers are dismissed  in the afternoon.  

Additional duties: 1 late night activity and at times helping the pools with lifeguard duty
