Fifth Grade Curriculum

In fifth grade General Studies, students continue to read a variety of novels and discuss the books in whole class and small groups. There is a big emphasis on asking questions and discussions, pushing students to think critically about what they have read. Students begin to write more detailed paragraphs, incorporating new grammatical skills. Students become more independent note takers as they study colonial times through the Civil War in social studies. In math, students work on skills such as multiplication and division of fractions, multiplying with decimals, and learning how to solve complex multistep problems. As part of our signature fifth grade program, students engage in a year-long project documenting their family’s history about a chosen artifact, which they present, along with their family trees, at the Heritage Fair in the spring. In Judaic Studies, students begin to study Sefer Shemot (Exodus) and use the Bishvil HaIvrit program for their Hebrew language studies. Students continue to learn Navi and are introduced to the study of Mishna as well. Students share their own interpretive questions on a variety of texts. The last year of elementary school culminates with a Siyum before the students move onto middle school.
