First Grade Curriculum
Beginning in first grade, students have different teachers for General and Judaic studies. In first grade General Studies, students study phonics, reading, writing, handwriting, math, social studies, and science. Our literacy program is multi-faceted. We use a research-based program called Fundations to explicitly teach the rules of the English language, reading fluency, vocabulary, handwriting, and spelling. Additionally, students study multiple genres of text including non-fiction, fairy tales, and narratives. Students also apply their literacy skills during social studies, where they research and learn about our local community. Our math curriculum, TERC Investigations, is a standards-aligned curriculum that teaches students mathematical skills and understanding through hands-on problem- solving. In first grade Judaic Studies, students learn Ivrit (Hebrew language) and Chumash through iTalam and L’havin U’lehaskil. Students learn the Parsha weekly, as well about the holidays throughout the calendar year. One highlight of the first grade academic year is the milestone event -The Chag HaSiddur presentation, when students receive their siddurim and begin to build their connection to God through prayer.
